Prominent Honduras and COPINH leader, Berta Cáceres, made waves in 2014, leading a radical movement rooted in inclusivity and progression for her people. From blocking a hydroelectric dam to protect her land and mineral resources to devastating assassinations of her team, they pushed through and built unity and strength in their movement.
Berta’s life came to a tragic end in 2016 when she was assassinated by armed intruders following years of threats to her life regarding her work blocking the implementation of a hydroelectric dam. Her murder was followed by two more activists’ within the same month. Berta stood with Indigenous Lenca communities in Honduras in their fights for their land and water until her last moments.
AMI would like to remember Berta’s contributions. Honduras remains to be one of the deadliest places for journalist assassinations, despite the country being in desperate need of investigative reporting. Activists and journalists alike have mourned the many murders that have taken place over the years and yet, Honduras is a common site for assassinations.
Agricultural Missions is proud to have been an ally of COPINH, to struggle together with Berta Cáceres, and to one day partner in Honduras again.
