In Liberia and Sierra Leone, Week of Compassion is planting seeds for the future–figuratively and literally.
About two decades ago, Agricultural Missions, Inc. launched the West Africa Initiative to help rural communities in Liberia and Sierra Leone recover after the civil war spanning over a decade in both countries. The program began by helping communities restart farming and increase local food production.
For almost half a decade, Week of Compassion has been a faithful funding partner in this work. Its support has helped AMI and its in-country partners train farmers, strengthen food production and storage, develop youth leadership, support girls’ education, and build community-led responses to gender-based violence.
By the end of 2025, 51 active groups were serving about 1,500 farmers and their families, reaching approximately 10,000 people. A total of 345 girls had also received school support. Through renewed funding for 2026 – 2027, WAI will support 270 girls across 18 villages and reach approximately 450 community members through gender-based violence prevention activities.
We are grateful to Week of Compassion for helping rural communities build stronger local institutions, improve food sovereignty, and create greater opportunities for farmers, women, girls, and young people.
